About Mississippi (MS)

“Golly, I didn’t know!”

That, or something like it, is what we frequently hear when we tell folks about Mississippi. This is a state full of surprises to most people – even many long-time residents.

  • Mississippi has some of the best beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. “Golly, I didn’t know!”

  • Mississippi has real live, fully equipped, exciting casinos.  “Golly, I didn’t know!”

  • The ‘blues’ were born in Mississippi – not Tennessee. “Golly, I didn’t know!”

  • Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, MS. “Golly, I didn’t know!”  – And occasionally returned there, even after achieving worldwide fame, to revisit his humble origins.

  • No state in the country offers better fishing with a wider variety of hookable species than Mississippi. “Golly, I didn’t know!”

  • Mississippi has some of the best hunting in the USA – especially water fowl. “Golly, I didn’t know!”

  • Come! Visit Mississippi. You'll learn about a great state while having great fun!

Getting here
Mississippi is very accessible from any direction if you’re driving. Or, if you are winging your way in you have the Gulfport-Biloxi (GPT) airport for the Gulf beaches. The Jackson (JAN) airport, in central Mississippi, also serves Vicksburg. Tupelo (TUP) serves Tupelo and northeastern Mississippi and Memphis (MEM), just over the state line in Tennessee, also serves the northwestern Mississippi.

Most of Mississippi's visitors come here for one or more of the following six reasons: business, history, hunting, fishing, gambling or just to relax and have fun. And, rarely, is a visitor to this beautiful state disappointed.

Business in Mississippi
Mississippi has an aggressive program to attract new industry. In fact, it has already been very successful in attracting pollution-free industry to the state. Coordination with the several State Universities has been very productive - not only for the present but with great future implications. Mississippi IS history!
Native American cultures flourished here long before the Spaniards invaded in the 16th Century. Then the French came, and the English until, finally, Mississippi became a state in the new country of the United States of America. There are so many old mansions in Mississippi that it has been a horrific challenge just preserving them for future generations. Mississippians have done a great job of restoring and preserving and there are many for you to visit and inspect.

The Civil War was fought here in earnest and there are many battlegrounds and monuments. As you drive around the loop in Vicksburg National Military Park, listening to the audio tape, the horror of that 47-day siege is almost brought to life. And there are so many more mementos of that dark period of American history. Nor was the Civil War (why do they call it that?) the only one fought here.

The Natchez Trace
This old pioneer migration trail now under the ownership and care of the National Park Service, is a beautiful drive from Nashville TN to Natchez Mississippi. It could take you over a week if you stop to visit all the sites of historic interest on the way.

Fishing
It is claimed that fishing is the most popular outdoor activity in Mississippi. You don't have to go far in any direction to find a good 'fishing hole' but you do have to be more selective if you are looking for a specific kind of fishing. There are more than 150 different species of fish to be hooked in the freshwater lakes, ponds and tributaries of Mississippi. If the thrill of deep water fishing is more your style, head down to the Gulfport-Biloxi area where you will find many charter services itching to take you (and your group) out on the Gulf.

Hunting
While there is good hunting almost everywhere in Mississippi, the best area for deer, wild turkey and water fowl is the western area along the Mississippi River. Hunting is seasonal and we suggest you phone the authorities at 800-546-4868 (toll-free) for the necessary information before packing up and taking off for your hunt.

Gambling
Gambling has become a major 'industry' in Mississippi. It started (legally, anyway) on a few riverboats on the Mississippi River. Now some areas, for instance, Tunica, are like Las Vegas - lights and all. In fact, Tunica has the largest concentration of casinos between Las Vegas and Atlantic City! (see
Tunica)

Or, Just Relax and Have FUN!
No matter what elso you may come to Mississippi for, its overwhelming invitation to relax and have fun is difficult to ignore. On the water, in the water or under the water; over hundreds of miles of trails, foot or bike; in the wonderfully scented forests (is that why this is the Magnolia State?); play time is in.
